Omschrijving werk

Maja Bekan: "By working with different mediums, I explore the notion of (free) time, the use of it, its initiation, establishment and ritualisation. I am interested in a collaborative and social as a medium approach in my artistic practice and I work on long term research-based projects that involve different levels of collaborations, and that are presented to the public in the form of performances, specifically created environments, video/audio/text based installations and public conversations. In 2008 I’ve initiated two long-term research projects: Secret Powers for Identity, Security and Self- Respect in Troubling Times and P for Performance, platform investigating performance as a stage of potential for knowledge production. And in 2012, together with Angela Serino (curator) Bodies at Work, a collaborative research project examining and voicing what kind(s) of “work” it is that art and cultural workers do. What is their relationship to time and space, how and for whom they work, how they balance their private, social and professional life, and what are the advantages and pitfalls of such circumstances. Involving various collaborations, “Bodies at Work” enfolds itself trough small-scale performances, lectures, conversations and printed materials. I am one of the co-founders and developers of the Rotterdam based artists’ initiative ADA, Area for Debate and Art (www.adarotterdam.nl) and I’ve been involved in different art comities and educational programs such as residency place Kunsthuis SYB and Piet Zwart Institute, MA Fine Arts program".

A Series of Unexpected Incidents
Titel A Series of Unexpected Incidents
Jaartal 2016
Omschrijving Since the 20th of November 1992, an empty plinth can be found in the backyard of a tenement building on 15A Marszałkowska Street. Not so long ago, in spring of 2014, few remembered what was actually standing there. This empty plinth has triggered collaboration between an artist and several neighbors from Warsaw’s MDM estate. P for Performance: A series of unexpected incidentsis a response to the desire to have the sculpture, which was standing there, back. Hence: Where is the artwork? And what has happened to Maja Bekan's performance? Sunday meetings and planning are the backbone of the activities of a group of neighbors a part of the Oleandrów Association. The work of the artist, whom they've met in 2014, has already contributed to the association’s mission. The neighborhood Xmas party happened, the project of revitalization of the Skwer Oleandrów proceeds, and a local festival audience was entertained with the group’s presentation. So their performance at the Centre for Contemporary Art is a result of friendship, but it is also the next step in making some plot come true.

Titel Wouldnt it be nice to live like an art
Jaartal 2014
Omschrijving Wouldn’t it be nice to live like an art object…or thank you for taking (a)part is a conversation piece in the format of ‘the artist talk’, between the artist’s mother and her peers. This event is developed in two phases: as an attempt of exercise in becoming 'common', the artist’s mother will take intensive English lessons (a language she doesn't speak) that will hopefully enable her to engage with the discursive part of her daughter's art practice. In the second phase of the work, she will re/present the artist during the artist talk where she will act as a host and guide the audience through Bekan’s art practice and the work on display.

Golden Party, still from video
Titel Golden Party, still from video
Jaartal 2012
Omschrijving The video Golden Party explores various manifestations of ‘amateurish’ multi level sales practices trough Tupperware –like parties, organized among social acquaintances. My focus group was my mother and group of her close friends who regularly meet, once a week, and who as a hobby, are freelancing for various multi level companies ranging from jewelry to health. Recent economical crisis introduced different variation of these so-called ‘parties’ and included ‘gold valuation’ and exchange. The gathering was re-staged and filmed in Belgrade, in the family apartment.
