Maya Verlaak: "I always liked building instruments: instruments that end up working really badly because of my ignorance of instrument building. But since I am after all a composer, I always find a way to use their accidental or not accidental limitations as compositional parameters. These limitations give me material to work with, and lead the composition in a certain direction and structure. Looking back over the last 6 years, I noticed a sustained line throughout my work. If I wasn’t building instruments, I was mis using existing instruments, or rather, „reinventing” them. I contextualize instrument building within a broad panorama of the time and place the instruments were build and composed for. This can be about the existing and known philosophy of the time but also the knowledge in science and the political situation of the country. Why have people built what they have built; what science knowledge have they employed; Why can I find so many historical instruments merely built to sound like another instrument? What about all the instruments that were never completed but only stayed a drawing or concept? Many have described instrumental concepts, not with the intention to make them, just to describe and talk about them. Sometimes the instruments could not be build because there was simply not the technology for it. Other examples do show the technical possibility to build them but there was simply no interest in that. I love to compare this to what a composer is doing, can I just make concepts for compositions? Concepts that are so much self contained in a text format that they are a piece of music?"

Omschrijving Zoeken naar bakens in het landschap by Maya Verlaak A walk in Italy's landscape. In collaboration with artist Patrick Verlaak. The little moving car on the big piece of paper gets controlled by the String Quartet infront. The orchestra is timed and so conducted by the drawing car. The car draws a part of a route in Italy.
