Omschrijving werk

My artistic practice is a research that focuses on the paradoxes inherent in the physical world. I make drawings, spatial objects of ceramics and other materials, installations and works in the field of performance. My subjects part from the idea that the human being constructs value with its surrounding objects and commodities putting himself on the top of the food chain whereas he contributes only a friction of value through inventions that leads him often to self-harm. To escape out of this human generational thinking, I am seduced by age old formations of rocks and stones. Silently through every generation, they are there witnessing us humans performing transformations on them. Humans carve, worship, drill, melt and pulverize them into asphalt, monuments, gifts, ideologies, tools and ´supernatural powers´. All these expressions derive from the same source. A curiosity about life in all its forms, the wonder of the natural sciences, biological and social interpersonal processes that ensure that everything is always in motion and every moment is unique and irreplaceable. One fundamental question in my practice is how this curiosity is approached. Human desire makes an idea manifest. Making follows ideation, inevitably. Evaluation only comes later, either as celebration or damage control. Ideas have no weight, and yet, they drive the world, they empty lakes and invert and move mountains. Probably the idea of carving a lake in a rock and build with the carved rock a monument of pharaonic dimensions,is an idea as unreasonable as freezing the lake and offering it as an enormous ice cube inverting the line of the horizon and the laws of gravity. I defy physics and social conventions through the obsession of my ideas; I would like to find blindly obsessed a model “to be able to go on”. As an ice crystal that has a pattern which is mirroring the world microscopically. It is eternal. And every one of them reflects the complete whole.

Omschrijving We are sitting in a quarry, the stones were formed 270 million years ago. An outburst of a volcano in the supercontinent Pangae, brought the inner treasures of the earth to the surface. The pressure of the earth together with 270 million years cristallised the lava to granite: Beuchaer Granit Pyrophyr. The common witness of this process were the sun and the moon. They pass me this knowledge by waking me up and calming me down every day.

Omschrijving There is an ice pyramid - in the image already totally melted - between copper sticks, placed in front of a video projection. The ice pyramid contains a contact - hydrophone which captures the sound of melting ice. The sound is offered for the visitors through 1 pair of headphones.

Omschrijving There is no question that the meaning of material is in constant flux. For instance buildings, monuments or the context of the soil we live on changes through time, much faster than the development of crystals leaving the stones fiercely unbreakable doing it's job, being immortal for each generation's truth. This attempt of duplicating the representation of “diamond” according to Wikipedia, presented on a computer screen, that also has tiny crystal structures from our soil plays with the transformative qualities of material. And the exploration of the imperfections of all media that surrounds us, trying to find unintended knowledge systems inside them.

Omschrijving The result of an extended research I did in 2006/2007. I undertook the challenge of recreating ge­odes out of base materials using quartz as the main in­gredient and hot air. I stumbled upon some recipes for crystal glaze, which were used a lot in the 70's to create a certain psychedelic ef­fect on bathroom or kitchen tiles. These recipes I developed to 3D formulas, which I used to make the filling of the sculptures. Some I opened af­terward, others remain closed. Crystals are not only beautiful because of their pure aesthetic, but also because they are the result of very long and slow development, revolving around transforma­tion and becoming. Eight years after its creation, I want to address the question of decay and its shift of aesthetic quality overtaken by the laws of nature.

Omschrijving A live set presented in The Hague and Cologne. A sample of water of a lake that used to be a German granite quarry blown up in size through a microscope. The stone of the quarry has been used to make one of Europe´s biggest war memorrials; The Monument to the Battle of Nations. By the light organisms get back to life and interact with eachother. They eat each other, but also mate. Before the visitor´s eye the image of the moon changes continuously.

Omschrijving This multimedia installation consists of found Styrofoam blocks which contain a television which shows a video of approximately 3 minutes. The image that is filmed is a picture from a flatsceen. With zooming into the picture it automatically gives room to include the pixels from the screen. These pixels come into dialogue with the Styrofoam in the installation. The picture is a church on the cliff with an igloo tent in the void. The cliff is there because of the digging of a quarry to gain granite to build The Monument to the Battle of Nations in Leipzig. While the film shows small parts of the image at the time, the narrator tells a story of the specific space and its historical events. These are interwoven in the wish of the narrator to stand on the part of the hill that is removed, nowadays the void were the tent floats. The piece is a research into material, specifically its transformative qualities on a practical and conceptual level.
