Omschrijving werk

In my videos, performances and installations, I want to communicate the joys and conflicts that exist in commonplace objects and situations. I often construct real but absurd situations in which social codes have been changed slightly. My practice depends on live events. The ‘affected’ people are also a kind of audience to my work, whether or not they ever find that out. I’m interested in how people react to a performance as a real event, not what they think of as art. There are also people who might have seen me try out something that will never become a finished work. A recent work called 'Hardcore' is based on interventions and real-life situations filmed during the Nuclear Security Summit which was held in The Hague, The Netherlands. Footage of roadblocks, fences, and police surveillance enter into a dialogue with fictional characters that creep through the woods, theories about body language and images of captive and wild animals. 'Hardcore' offers an awkward, but humorous take on the system of State power. I like combining documentary with fiction as it creates a space to think about the system(s) that surround us. Currently I am working with some questions I have about economic exchange, gestures found in history, and social behaviour of collectives. My goal is not so much to offer an alternative to generally accepted norms and standards, because I don’t know if that is possible in the first place. However, I can be adamant about the fact that I repeatedly use art to try and understand social systems and the way we behave.

The Story of Kinga
Titel The Story of Kinga
Jaartal 2016

Omschrijving During the opening hours of the " Word Counter ' visitors could come to us and donate a word. In exchange for that word, you get a number. While you look at the exhibition a performer ( who is undercover as a visitor ) will establish a conversation with you based on your word. After some time, the number will be announced by the front desk employee and your golden certificate, showing the response while talking to this undercover performer, is handed to you. It is a system that makes your sentence, giving back what has been said. I give you my word . Thanks to Anna Luczak and Sjoerd van Leeuwen .
