Omschrijving werk

The central question to my practice is: From which position is one talking? I am interested in labor conditions in culture, the states of systemic crisis and art’s value in the social sphere. I consider my practice an ongoing research about modes of indexation of ideology, what does it mean to make a decision and how is a belief generated. To solve it, the notion of event becomes central in my work, considering each one of its public iterations a research in the moment when subjectivity enters the political. Working from a symbolic language, I go beyond the mere form to explore the performative capacities of these events, including lectures, debates, workshops, and the production of objects. The aesthetic materialisation of the work remains an open process of negotiation with various collaborators (experts and non), where I lay at the same level both complexity and transparency, highlighting the ties between culture and soft power. Conceptually, I am interested in processes of recognition. I research different moments in recent history and their correlation with progress, nostalgia and future imaginations from the point if view of capital, technology and culture.

An Awkward Game
Titel An Awkward Game
Jaartal 2015
Omschrijving First public presentation:1646, The Hague, June 2015 An Awkward Game is a week long event on the intersection between table tennis and politics. Consisting of a series of public events and an installation on the political origins of the game. The origins of table tennis are aligned with geopolitics: British aristocrat Ivor Montagu set the rules of the game in the 30s, as he believed it could help spread Communism over the world. He became a Soviet spy, befriending Trotsky, Chaplin and producing Hitchcock’s early films. When Mao established the game as China’s national sport it became a vital cog in his foreign policy, reaching its peak with the reestablishment of US-China relations through the exchange of table tennis players in 1971. In this project, I parallel diplomacy to dialogics, a term coined by Bakhtin also in the 30s meant to note how readers become engaged in a story by nonlinear processes, and that is currently used in social sciences , stressing how dialogue itself enables the existence of ‘the other’.

Omschrijving This lecture performance followed an invitation by Nat Muller to take part in Breaking the Bank, an event series that took place during the exhibition 'The Value of Nothing' at TENT Rotterdam (NL). More info here In 'Deface the Currency' a lecture was split in three different moments and delivered by three different actresses. The lecture itself addressed three different moments: Three stories around the exile of Diogenes and the foundation of Cynicism; three political moments in the US between 2002 and 2011 dealing with enthusiasm, awareness and rescue; and finally three events around sports and politics around the year 3000. To have this information delivered, the audience used the three coins that they received after paying the entrance fee. Or they did not, and just sneaked in, keeping the three coins as a memento.

Omschrijving This conference is considered the introductory piece of the series. It is based on the introduction of Barnum’s book where, in a very moralistic way, he settles the ground that one should follow to succeed in business. I conceived a speech where the performer is accompained with a greek chorus. A greek chorus was an homogenous, non-individualised group of performers in the plays of classical Greece, who commented with a collective voice on the dramatic action, to help the audience follow the performance. Their comments showed how an ideal audience might react to the drama.

Select the Right Location
Titel Select the Right Location
Jaartal 2013
Omschrijving Select the Right Location is a theatre piece. In the plot, a city is flooding and five artists seek shelter on the contemporary art museum’s rooftop. Each one of them has saved one valuable object from the flood, which is symbolic to the kind of artist that saved it and to the main topics discussed in the play. The artists are waiting for the flood to pass and meanwhile, they talk about their present -and future- situation. At one point, the occupation of the museum becomes a plausible possibility. The artists, then, decide to stay in the museum. Alongside the live performance of the play, the work is presented as a video-installation: A film version of the play, a publication containing the script, and the objects displayed on the same props used in the theatre. All action happens in front of a Green Chroma background that remains unedited. The possibility to virtually change the background where the action takes place refers directly to the title: Select the Right Location. Where to locate the action remains then a responsibility of the viewer, unavoidably identified with the situation. Leaving the background un-edited, provokes to viewer to project the location where they imagine this situation could take place.

Omschrijving Seoul Art Space Geumcheon is a community arts center placed in an industrial area of Seoul (Korea). Barnum’s sentence was translated into Korean, to be painted on the rooftop of the center’s warehouse. The sentence would be visible from the airplanes landing or departing from the nearby Incheon airport, or from the typically Korean tall apartment buildings. An accident during the painting of the rooftop prevented me to finish the painting. Instead, I had to be taken to the hospital. The moment was captured by a collaborator with her camera. The unfinished photograph of the painting and the one of the accident compose this accidental version of the work.

Omschrijving Radical Colophon is an event dealing with radical aesthetics. It consists of a constantly changing space, designed specifically for the occasion, in a close relationship with the context where it takes place. Using diverse performative approaches, it intends to trigger a debate, with a number of selected guests, on the notion of radical aesthetics and activism. So far, three editions of the project have been completed, organizing events in San Francisco (USA, Seoul (KR) and Amsterdam (NL).

Omschrijving As an AiR at Wander (The Hague, The Netherlands) I was invited, together with artists Anne Breure and Kosta Tonev, to participate in the seminar 'Shifting AiR Strategies' that took place in Delft (NL) on December 2013. The seminar was organized by Transartists, CreArt, Wander, id11 and Satellietgroep. We worked on the topics of tourism and the international artist, and developed three independent lecture performances. My proposal, Deep Play, was a life streaming lecture on tourist pleasure, replicas and authenticity that included analog 3D anaglyphs. At the end of the lecture, I gave a demonstration on how to identify and distinguish authentic Dutch Delftware from fake replicas, showing a live example of each, and proceeding to crashing them to demonstrate the differences in the cracks. After the lecture, I re-constructed a vase containing the pieces of both the authentic and the fake porcelains.
