Omschrijving werk

Kosta Tonev:"My practice employs the element of subjecthood as a medium, rather than a theme. My objective is to trace the relationship between the micro, or private narrative and the political. I see the body as an object of power, and consequently a field for artistic intervention and transformative gestures. By doing so I place the emphasis not on the individual identity, but on the surrounding social order. Similarly, I employ historical narratives to raise questions about the present moment. Through references to cinema, mail art, collections, language and text I combine my interest in conceptual art with realism and craftsmanship".

The Heavenly Bodies...
Titel The Heavenly Bodies...
Jaartal 2013
Omschrijving "The Heavenly Bodies, Once Thrown into a Certain Definite Motion, Always Repeat" Soon after I became a courier myself, I began to write one letter on the lower left corner of each of the packages I was ordered to deliver. Put together in a chronological order, the packages form the sentence «The heavenly bodies, once thrown into a certain definite motion, always repeat.» It is quotation from the Capital by Karl Marx who made it metaphor for his theory of the business cycle. This lightboxes contain photographs of the 67 packages and letters I delivered as part of this project.

Death of a Cyclist
Titel Death of a Cyclist
Jaartal 2013
Omschrijving The video is a reference to the 1955 Spanish film noir «Death of a Cyclist.» The movie reveals a story, in which the two main characters strike a bicyclist with their car, and are left to deal with the consequences of the murder. My video reenacts the scene of the accident from the perspective of the offenders approaching the site of the crime. The camera lens slowly approaches the rotating wheel of the thrown down bicycle, ultimately capturing a close-up of the cyclometer attached to it, which keeps counting.

Omschrijving A lecture-performance on the topics of exclusion and existance outside the political and natural body. Largely based on Kafka’s Before the Law, it features the characters of Napoleon Bonaparte who introduced the first modern ID system and Abraham Lincoln who repeatedly encountered the illusion of his doppelganger while their death masks are being projected in the background. In Western societies the death mask has a history of signifying lineage, which was in turn the basis for a person‘s idenification in society. www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbJHuej4iyY

Omschrijving The video tells the story of an object. An artist had illegally appropriated a police roadblock exhibiting it in a gallery. One morning, the cleaning lady of the gallery was surprised to see a group of police people who were claiming the object. On the first screen of the double-channel video installation, the cleaning lady tells the story of what has happened. On the second one, a group of actors embody the characters that appear in her story. https://vimeo.com/72047740

Costa
Titel Costa
Jaartal 2008
Omschrijving The Costa project explains the associations that my name evokes in foreign contexts, and particularly in Austria where I currently live and work. It documents an action, in which I change the official spelling of my name. The work consists of a video, a photograph and a wall drawing. In the video I point out that my name does not only occur as a first name. Spelled with C it could often be found as a name of various brands that exist in relation to the tourist industry. I however attempt to distinguish my name from the names of such brands, as I explain that although both are phonetically identical, they do not share the same origin and significance—one of them represents a nickname descending from the name Constantine, while the other one refers to the Spanish/Italian word for coast. As I change the spelling of my name, I also intervene in its original meaning, so that it becomes open to other interpretations. The photograph captures the end result, as it depicts my passport with my name spelled „Costa“. The wall drawing that goes along with the video and the photograph represents the name Costa made in the style of Picasso’s signature. It is another transformation of my name and a playful comment on the importance of names and identities in art systems.

Omschrijving ose of creating an alter ego of myself. It was initially developed for an exhibition in the United States. In order to be present at the opening it was necessary for me to obtain a US visa. My idea was to produce a work for the exhibition that would relate to this process. I took a photograph of myself in a studio setting, standing in front of a white photo background and holding a mirror in my hand. It captured the reflection of my face in the mirror, in a way that corresponds to the Visa Photograph Requirements. Subsequently the photo was cropped, leaving visible only the reflected surface. In this form the photo was reproduced in my visa.
