Omschrijving werk

My art practice originates from a philosophical interest in the nature of our being and our position towards reality, in particular the tension between our own experience and the accepted rationality in a given society. The accepted rationality tries to dictate how to observe reality, to enforce a norm based on causality. I oppose this by encouraging reflection on the personal meaning of reality, the experience; not to be bound by the effects of an information bubble, the curtailing of our personality by being presented with what an algorithm or the common rationality of a given society expects us to want or observe. To realize this in my work, I aim to detach the viewer from the public, reduce the influence of the common opinion and to induce a personal experience. This is either achieved by removing the other form the sphere of observation by reducing the size to a one person view, by making use of the difference between subjective/objective observation or by using materials in such a way that the work becomes viewpoint dependent, ensuring the no-one sees the same at the same time. Reducing the work to the personal sphere instead of the public sphere - enforcing an experience. All with the aim that one will search for meaning using one’s memories instead of the accepted rationality. I extend the awareness of the existence of information bubbles further to the exhibition level. I consider an exhibition to be more then a set of works with a similar theme, the exhibition itself as an installation on its own. An exhibition provides the means to play with the common rationality and to create an information bubble. Reflection and discussion is an important part of the exhibition, to question the common perception and to make the public realize there is more than the common rationality, to burst the bubble.
