Omschrijving werk

In each work there is a strong connection between the title and the visual layer - the work itself. A work is not finished before I find a title that fits it perfectly. It is the connection between the viewer and the form, through which the content reveals itself layer by layer the longer you think on it. Sometimes the process of finding a title that fits takes as long as creating the actual drawing. This makes sure that the motive, philosophy or thought behind the work is captured in its very essence. These titles come from many sources of inspiration; it can be a book, a film, a conversation and many more things, but always an interaction, be it directly or indirectly, with another individual, dead or living. The process of creating the visual layer of a work, usually a drawing, is slow and tedious. It goes against the usual pace of our time which is fast and usually rushed. I prefer a certain quality instead of quantity, necessity over excess, a level of attention, something I rarely find in works that finish quickly or things that are rushed. Usually the essence of a work, the significance - the why are you making this - becomes clearer when being able to work on it - and therefor reflect on it - for a longer period of time, but at the same using only what you need. When it does, this reflection strengthens both the work and the title and helps develop it, inspiring new work and also allowing you to grow as a artist. The aim of my work is to combine a way of thinking or philosophy, with clear, minimalistic non-figurative visual layer that encourages viewers to take the time to absorb the work. The message of a work is not only in what you see or read, but also in how its made and what it tells you.
