Omschrijving werk

Grounded in the quotidian, I use photography, installation, drawing and collecting to map experience. Idiosyncratic and photographic, I focus attention on the insignicant details of our urban and civic spaces, particularly the unloved and unwanted. My street-based photographic practice hones in on the residue of consumer activity and traces of human interaction capturing images that form substantial typologies depicting the fads and fashions of contemporary society over time. It is informed by notions of privacy post 9/11, the influx of imagery via digital technologies and of waste. My current research interest revolves around the idea of middens and mounds. From an archeological perspective middens speak of the way societies made use of resources available to them. Early societies used what they needed before moving onto other food sources and regions, rarely depleting their bounties. In contrast, mounds refer to the waste created by western societies and their consumer cycles. Mounds speak of greed
and capitalist systems that insist consumers keep up-to-date buying unnecessary goods that eventually fill tips with outdated technology, litter our streets or wash up on our shores.

Jaartal 2015
Omschrijving Shootin’ Gallery is the heart of Turnstile. Its interactivity comes from thousands of keyworded photographs, hundreds of snippets of overheard conservations and even more observations on the street not caught on camera chip. The database is designed to serve all content randomly so that no one knows what to expect, me included. Shootin’ Gallery is added to regularly. Small typologies form, some strongly connected to a particular place, others more broad spanning the globe and uniting it. You’ll nd plastic bags, port-a- loos, underwear, kombi vans and more by searching the A to Z which lists all sets, from places lived in and visited including London, Paris, Helsinki, Tromso, Sydney et al.

Lurker
Titel Lurker
Jaartal 2015
Omschrijving Lurker’s seed was planted in Paris, a city where the great street photographers Brassai, Cartier-Bresson, Atget and others worked their silver sorcery. In the 21st century street photographers are treated suspiciously post-Diana and 9/11, with Paris tough on paparazzi making the city a haven for celebrities wishing to avoid the prying lenses of covert photographers. The models on the covers of Lurker are neither restricted to Paris nor celebrities. Their unposed photographs are quickly composed as they wander into and out of view completely unaware that fifteen seconds of fame had been thrust upon them. Only four shots are taken, there is no following and it is all over within seconds. Lurker is on ongoing project with new covers created for each new place visited. The three images here are from the Double Denim subset. The project is supported by a blog, which can be found at lurker-by-david-wills.tumblr.com

The Daily Beagle

Jaartal 2014
Omschrijving Torn pages from thousands of magazines of all persuasions are carefully selected by type or theme and placed into new categories. Old ling cabinets with drawers painted in different colours using domestic paint charts to select colours, not by hue but by paint name, for example, Pollywaf e, Pucker Up or Patriot. The colours create an idiosyncratic ling system, with unexpected topics sharing the same drawer. Audiences are invited to research the les and tell of their ndings. The work is interested in the use of photography and information as print media falls from grace to digital technologies.

De Giraffe Reisde in een Rugzak
Titel De Giraffe Reisde in een Rugzak
Jaartal 2013
Omschrijving De giraffe reisde in een rugzak was created whilst on a self-funded residency in Dordrecht in the Netherlands. Many of the images were created within a three month period and focus on my time in the southern city along with travels to nearby cities, towns and rural areas. The piece was designed and printed locally. The work uncovered connections and highlighted differences between places giving the work a uniquely Dutch perspective. Following the exhibition I was invited to conduct workshops at the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam.
