Omschrijving werk

Jazz Szu-Ying Chen: "I am interested in beauty and the grotesque within the field of anatomy, specifically medical wax models from the 16th century, such as Clemente Susini’s and Gaetano Giuio Zummo’s wax models. I manipulate the dissected anatomical imageries and create tableaus with unlikely characteristics such as Flemish floral/fruit details, French ornaments, East Asian illustrative symbolic elements, and Japanese anime. I use the tableaus to tell a story about the clash between Eastern and Western cultural conventions, and they also function as social commentaries on contemporary society. I usually work with painting, drawing, or printmaking. In the last two years i have been working with printmaking but i have recently returned to intricate ink drawing on paper/canvas. At the moment i am exploring working with my Taiwanese roots but avoiding cliches by embracing Taiwan's obscure culture such as the interest in conserving Formosa Golden Bats. In Taiwan, bats are also a symbol for "joy", in contrary to many of Western beliefs that bats are a sign of the malevolent. This is an example of my subject focus. I also am interested in Julia Kristeva's "Abject" theory and i incorporate it subtley into my works".

Werk

Abject Of The Night
Titel Abject Of The Night
Jaartal 2015
Omschrijving This piece is based on Julia Kristeva’s “Abject” theory and an old Taiwanese childhood bedtim story “Auntie Tigress” . it is about parents using the boogeyman aspect of the story to make the children obedient, using the Tigress as the abject (creating social boundaries to police the society). And this piece also comments on the deteriorating Taiwanese culture as Taiwan risk forgetting old heritage and tales, for the admiration of influences from the West.

Joy, Peace, Insecurities
Titel Joy, Peace, Insecurities
Jaartal 2015
Omschrijving "Joy, Peace, Insecurities" is in the same series as "Abject Of The Night" and "Dying Revulsion". It is playing on Taiwan's traditional symbol of bats (symbolizing "joy/peace"). This piece is about Taiwan's appraisal of Western (European, American) culture, often over its own cultural roots. The composition of this etching plays on the old Baroque/Arabesque designs of animals perched on top of the filigrees. The animals were often standing proud on the filigrees, but the bats in this image were frustrated and scared from being entangled in the filigrees. The filigrees is a symbol of Western influences while the bats are a symbol of Taiwan's own happiness.

Dying Revulsion
Titel Dying Revulsion
Jaartal 2015
Omschrijving This piece is in the same series as “Abject Of The Night” and “Joy, Peace, Insecurities.” It is an extension of the theme based on the Taiwnaese fairy tale called “Auntie Tigress” (Taiwanese version of Grimms’ “Little Red Riding Hood”), bats in Taiwan as a traditional symbol of peace & joy, and cultural inferiority complex in Taiwan. In this image, bat skeletons and ornamental filigrees are purging from a tiger’s skull – as if it is being consumed by the tiger and infiltrating to its system. The usage of skeletal figures are a subtle symbol of Taiwan’s decaying traditions, because Western ideas and material possessions are seen as fashionable and forward thinking.

Passion
Titel Passion
Jaartal 2015
Omschrijving This piece is an experimental etching piece, where I played with uncontrollable textures using methylated spirits and inkjet powder on heated plate. I juxtapose the image with controlled figurative characeristics – passion flowers that I saw on the streets in during English summer. I added more depth to the image by painting it with acid

Entanglement of Decisions II
Titel Entanglement of Decisions II
Jaartal 2015
Omschrijving These two drawings are an extension of my study on bat anatomy, passion flowers, and Taiwan’s traditional symbolism of bats as peace and joy. In my recent works I have been exploring the idea of Taiwan’s cultural insecurities and its impact on the Taiwanese society. In these two drawings I examine the feeling of being in debt to your own roots, while being attracted to elements of Western aesthetics. The traditional Chinese bats are circling the bat skeleton while it is entangled by the tentacles of passion flowers – as if they are either trying to save the bat skeleton from the entanglement, or they are haunting the subject of its betrayal to the original tribe.

Standards of Beauty
Titel Standards of Beauty
Jaartal 2014
Omschrijving Standards of Beauty” is based around the medical anatomical bust- which is exhibits the standard of organ placements and the human body, and Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” – the universal symbol of classical beauty. This is my take on Clemente Susini’s Anatomical Venus waxwork. This piece is about the difference in beauty standards between Taiwan and United Kingdom – In UK, women of many shapes and sizes were considered beautiful, while in Taiwan, one needs to be stick thin, pale with clean face, to be considered conventionally beautiful.

Fragonards Decapitated Forest God
Titel Fragonards Decapitated Forest God
Jaartal 2014
Omschrijving This print is based on French anatomist Honore Fragonard’s flayed goat taxidermy – at that time, I re-watched Hayao Miyasaki’s “Princess Mononoke”, I remembered disliking the film as a child and it was the first time I saw it as an adult. I was very drawn to the scene of the decapitation of the forest god – the greedy antagonist believed the head of the forest god would grant her immortality. In that scene, the innards of the forest god became big black worms, devouring and rotting it’s environment.

Flayed Equus 2
Titel Flayed Equus 2
Jaartal 2014
Omschrijving Flayed Equus 2 of 4 is a series of painitngs i created using acrylic medium in a squeezy bottle to draw on a primed canvas surface. This mini series was exhibited at the Chinese New Year exhibition at Taiwan's Kaohsiung International Airport for their "Horse Year" Group Exhibition. In this mini series i appropriated Geroge Stubbs' horse anatomy illustrations. I wanted to give it an illusion of life growing from a rotting body - death creating life.
