Omschrijving werk

For years now, my family has been subject to the curious and often alarming activities of my father. Engaging in a series of projects, his is a constant struggle to present an alternate vision for the world. While it could be argued that, as a creative individual in his own right, he is now finding outlets for pent up frustration in latter years; I have been developing my own thesis on the subject. I firmly believe that the activities of my father, a veritable Don Quixote, represent an unerring desire to see the world beyond the borders of its perceived limitations. Transforming commonplace objects into thought provoking objects, adhering to strange geometries and alchemical logics and re-constructing the spaces in which we live; his is the realm of dreams and as yet unrealised potentialities. The significance of my fathers weird and wonderful innovations, however, emerges not only from the manner through which they reconstruct the way we relate to the environment but also from the confrontation that most often results. The back garden of my parents house, encompassing an area of approximately 10 square meters, has become a wonderland of unprecedented technical and aesthetic innovation created by my father and yet reveals a subtle topography of conflict as both my mother and father, two dialectically opposing ideologies, attempt to cultivate their own ideal corner of paradise. It is within this realm of tension, when established ideologies and preconceptions are challenged, that I situate my work. Combining a broad range of materials and processes and insinuating my work into the site-specificity of the environment, my work is in constant confrontation with its surroundings; a foreign body, a point of disruption, however subtle, through which the signs and objects of geopolitics and aesthetics, and their power structures, become clear.
