Omschrijving werk

Recente en lang lopende projecten zijn onder andere: Deep Body Massage, How Language Moves, Translation in the Dark, Il Milione en How to Lose Your Voice. In 2016 werd haar performance Deep Body Massage getoond tijdens Manifesta11, Guardian Images bij Nico Park Gallery Tokyo & Diginner Gallery Workshop, en GG and Five Fingers bij het in Amsterdam gevestigde kunstenaarsinitiatief Klupko. Marianna Maruyama moved to the Netherlands in 2012 after an extensive working period in Japan. Now residing in Den Haag, she is a researcher on invitation of the Sedje Hémon foundation. In her performances, audio recordings and publishing activities, Maruyama attends to the before and after moments of an event, extending the life of the creative encounters that inform her practice. In 2013, she published Three Movements, an artist’s book dealing with the negotiation of a globally-shared life after the nuclear disaster in Fukushima. In 2016 she was managing editor of the Kunstlicht issue “Translation As Method”. Recent and long-term projects include: Deep Body Massage; How Language Moves; Translation in the Dark; Il Milione; and How to Lose Your Voice. In 2016 she exhibited Deep Body Massage at Manifesta11, Guardian Images at Nico Park Gallery Tokyo and GG and Five Fingers at Amsterdam-based artist-initiative Klupko.

Omschrijving I connected the gesture of raking the earth with the gesture of giving a massage to a person. I commissioned a five-fingered rake to be built for the purpose. Before sunrise, I walked to a lot near my former apartment in Amsterdam to rake the ground as the sun came up. It was like a score written in the gravel for unspecified players.

Deep Body Massage
Titel Deep Body Massage
Jaartal 2015
Omschrijving In Deep Body Massage, I borrowed the voice of my physical therapist to speak my words, while acknowledging my own body as a speaker in itself, communicating through pressure, resistance, and transformation. Rather than opening my mouth to speak, other parts of my body — the musculature and organs — respond in various ways to the pressure he gives. Because the success of the treatment depends on the physical reciprocity between the giver and the receiver, body workers are especially attuned to the sounds of the body and their meanings: the growl of the stomach, the wide yawn, and the deep exhalation or sharp intake of air.

Omschrijving Back in the art space, the newly opened “Vandeler Forening” (vandal’s association), I opened the evening program of concerts and art performances by first drawing with the water I collected on the floor, and then doing a symbolic jumping action in the space until I missed a beat.

Omschrijving On the shortest day of the year, I went to a small island near Oslo with my artist collaborator Saulius Leonavicius and collected water from the shore as the darkness began to settle. I would bring this water back to Oslo for a jumping performance, symbolic of the challenges ahead. With humility and curiosity we tried to anticipate that future that was shining in the dusk on the shortest day of the year, misty and unavoidable, understanding that the only requirement that future is giving us is to be ready when it comes. There's some feeling of fatal optimism, also anxiety. How should we prepare for the future, how can we be ready? Be in the port when the boat will approach.

Letter
Titel Letter
Jaartal 2014
Omschrijving Letter, 2014 performance and publication, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Published in “Meglet” newspaper, Addis Ababa/Arnhem. In Letter, I drafted a one-page letter in English with the intention of translating it into Amharic (a process that involved five people and took over one hour) and publishing it for a predominately English speaking readership. The addressee of the letter only comes into being when a reader who is interested (enough) decides to find someone to help him or her understand it, while the content of the letter, calls attention to two overlooked, yet interconnected political events. The old-fashioned process of translating, with a person or people sitting down to attend to and commune with the text, slows down the delivery of the message of the letter (if it is ever delivered to its addressee), and also necessitates a social encounter between the person who cannot read the letter in its original language and the other person who can.

Titel Il Milione
Jaartal 2014
Omschrijving In the interest of playing with notions of authorship and collective writing practices, I invited artists, writers, and visitors to the gallery to copy, by hand, passages from the book Il Milione by Marco Polo. Working with sections of the book that have been translated into the native languages of the selected scribes (participating members), and writing on Chinese scrolls with India ink, this became a collective work by open call. I refer to “Pierre Menard, autor del Quijote,” the short story by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges. The fictional Menard “never contemplated a mechanical transcription of the original,” but I anticipated that this transcription would also turn into something more than pure rote copying. This project first took shape during an initial attempt of the transcription using a Dutch translation in Dordrecht, and the second edition was carried out at GEMAK, the Hague, over the course of three days: 8, 9 and 10 April 2014. People wrote in languages including Amharic, English, Farsi, Greek, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. Il Milione is an ongoing project.

. Omoide Salvage – Archive Recovery
Titel . Omoide Salvage – Archive Recovery
Jaartal 2014
Omschrijving Installation, Museum of Yugoslav History, Belgrade I conceptually paired ‘Tito's archive’ with a distant and enormous photo recovery project happening in Japan right now. The project Omoide (Memory) Salvage aimed to recover and return family albums from the wreckage and debris after the 11 March 2011 tsunami that wiped out numerous coastal town and cities. Because of my involvement with the project in 2011 and my connection to Japan, I decided to bring the work to a new public with this particular (re)archiving project together with colleague Manami Goda (Tokyo). By exhibiting the images of the photo recovery project in Japan at the Museum of Yugoslav History in Belgrade, I intended to connect two distant, yet related political situations. 49 photographs, diagram drawn onto the wall, booklet with interviews.
