The exilic experience- for that is what displacement, diaspora entails-will often instill in the exile & their offspring a longing for a home that no longer exists. The characters and places i paint & draw, in their apparent non-existence and physical irreality, seem to bear witness to this: these are people i haven't known; places i'll never visit. Their entire world, in fact, is a world where i don't belong, from which i am forever locked out, because you cannot live inside a painting. And yet, paradoxically, it's a place i would call Home.
