A plastic bottle of Japanese ‘Iyemon’ green tea was found on the Canadian beach in Tofino, B.C. in October 2015, during a research trip to find tsunami debris washed ashore on the other side of the Pacific Ocean. The bottle travelled a distance of about 7,000 km in four and a half years. This means that it travelled at approximately 0.18 km/h continuously. After contemplation on how to ‘repair’ the almost intact plastic bottle, it was brought back to where it was supposed be (in a garbage bin in a Tsunami-hit area in Japan). Price € 5,-

There is a tradition when a ship sails at a port, colorful paper ribbons are used as a ceremony. One side of a ribbon is hold by a passenger on board, and the other end by a person seeing him/her off. The ribbons symbolize unity and separation at the same time. During the quiet time of covid-19, I developed this installation for the façade of exhibition space The Branch, comparing it to a ferry that is about to sail, suggesting arrival of a new time. The exhibition Ways of Thinking at The Branch in Osaka has been organized by Lateral Lab in Scotland. https://youtu.be/x3AtUc9kS04

A musical theater piece which has been developed by artists Maria Kley, Nishiko and Japanese drum group Dadadadan Tenko. It was performed during the Oerol Festival 2017 at a beach of Terschelling island in the Netherlands. The drum players represent the objects which have been washed away by the tsunami, telling a story about the catastrophic disaster, the resilience of people and the purification of sorrow. Some of the objects collected for the 'Repairing Earthquake Project' appeared in the performance, and some other objects were shown in a form of outdoor exhibition. They were to be found in the wooden cases spread out in an area next to the stage and the bleachers directly on the sandy beach. The audience was invited to walk around the area to 'meet' the objects personally. A kite which was flown during the performance, suggesting the unimaginable scale of natural disasters. The original artwork consisted of distilled seawater and extracted sea salt, which the artists collected at four points on the beach in Scheveningen, the Netherlands, during the residency program at Badgast. In the presentation, the salt was displayed in four specimen dishes and behind that was water stored in four bottles. The accident took place during the opening as someone placed a wine glass on the shelf on which the work was displayed. It fell to the ground, and the work was completely destroyed. When I witnessed the incident, I was occupied with repairing broken objects. So I kept the shards and promised the artists to repair their work. It is also an homage to the numerous coincidences I have had through the Repairing Earthquake Project, which I have been working on since 2011, soon after I encountered the fallen artwork.

Pause is a light installation of fluorescent lights that flicker randomly and endlessly. The first version of this work was presented in 2010, and it is the starting point of the work for Undertones (here is a nice review) at Marres in Maastricht NL. Together with Mei-yi Lee(Sonolab), I have re-enacted the light installation using recorded sound instead of actual tube lights. I equested the audience to be patient. Listen to the sound for a while and imagine that there are fluorescent lights on the empty ceiling and that they are all flickering as if they are dying.

Sukebeningen, NishKo, Gabey Tjon a tham at Quartair, The Hague, NL 11—16 July 2014 Under the name ‘Sukebeningen’ Noriko Koide, Akane Takada and Yota Morimoto organize various art projects around sensuality and (Japanese) eroticism. They offer artists the opportunity to explore the subject from their specific point of view and from the viewpoint of their own artistic discipline. Usually it is a collaborative effort. Upon invitation by - and in collaboration with - Sukebeningen, Gabey Tjon a Tham and I developed the work ‘Glinting honey in the dark, a feather tickling on my back’ and presented in Quartair in The Hague. In the darkened environment we created a space-filling sensory installation, creating a subtle and sensual experience for the visitor. Thanks to Stroom Den Haag and Haruka Yamada. http://sukebeningen.org/ http://www.gabeytjonatham.com/ http://nishiko55.com/ http://www.quartair.nl/ http://stroom.nl/

An attempt of finding a universe inside the buidlign of Billytown. Black spots or stains with white background were captured on the b/w film, developed and projected on the ceiling. The scratches on the film were made to hilight the contrast in the devloping process. This work was made for the exhibition 'another metric' held in Billytown April 2013.

An ongoing project as a reaction to the biggest disaster in Japan's modern history. My intention is to face the dreadful tragedy throughout the whole course of going there, searching for destroyed objects by tsunami and repairing them. The space where this installation is shown is a former residence, currently an exhibition space Walden Affairs in Den Haag. The work is revealed only in the combination of the publication and the emptied presentation room, in where it was filled once with the world’s-best-person’s possession-like furniture then photographed and placed in the publication. When an audience realizes the synchronicity of the empty space and the publication, it draws the person into hypothetical reality where ethical judgment can be distinctly stated. (photo: Myung Feyen)

2023Tales of Absence Nieuwegracht 205 Utrecht, Nederland "Tales of Absence" is an exhibition featuring the works of three artists who independently traveled across the desolate countryside of Japan. By chance, our paths crossed in the Netherlands. While Miyuki looks at her home region with a poetic eye, for Maan, it was a journey of discovery through an unfamiliar land full of vacancy. Nishiko mainly encountered fractured areas in the Tohoku region and, in her own unique way, tried to repair the scars of the Japanese disaster of 2011. We aim to merge our narratives into a triptych, inviting visitors to join our personal, investigative journeys across the Japanese countryside. By combining printed images on paper and fabric, repaired objects, scents, and sounds within a special setting, we aspire to take visitors on a journey through our memories and thoughts. Our presentation will encompass both the sweet and bitter aspects, as well as both the personal and more observational ways of looking at the countryside. https://www.thelostworld.online/tales-of-absence/ Groep

2023Vanishing Points ps. K_o_t_ Amsterdam, Nederland ps. K_o_t_ kicks off 2023 with a duo exhibition by Nishiko and Joubin Zargarbashi. The work of both artists starts from the natural force of the ocean. Nishiko presents an installation as part of her 'Repairing Earthquake Project' (2011-). This project handles the catastrophic earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit Eastern Japan in 2011. The installation in ps. K_o_t_ follows the journey of a plastic green tea bottle, which was found on the Canadian coast after a trip across the Pacific Ocean and the subsequent attempt to 'repair' the bottle. In the series of works 'On the edge of the miraculous', Joubin Zargarbashi investigates forms of physical and mental transition to the unknown. This miraculous unknown is not in the point of departure or arrival, but is somewhere in between. The starting point for his research is Bas Jan Ader's last work, his epic journey across the Atlantic Ocean pskot.one/ Duo

And what happens when the seemingly unshakable principle of mutuality is reversed and the giver only wants to take? These and other questions are raised in three conceptual works that provoke the ethical framework and imagination of the viewer in an accurate, compassionate and mildly humorous way. www.waldenaffairs.nl/index.php?/future/sat-22-may-opening-nishiko-nasan-tur-chis-burden/ Groep
