2024HIIS: A Digital Sanctuary Shoreditch Arts Club London, Verenigd Koninkrijk The digital display at Shoreditch Arts Club will be on view from 16 – 27 September 2024. Heiter X presents HIIS: A Digital Sanctuary, an immersive showcase comprising ‘The Longest Movie Ever Made’ by Marit Mihklepp, and digital work by Taavet Jansen with visuals by JoJo&me and soundscape by Jo Nurm, presented by Protopia Collective. Inspired by sacred groves (hiis in Estonian) – ancient sites to offer gratitude and wishes to forest spirits – HIIS: A Digital Sanctuary by Heiter X is a digital space where reflections collected from the physical exhibition are transported and blended with visual and auditory elements to create a ‘web of life’. 2023The Death Began in Autumn Casa Lü AiR Mexico City, Mexico The Death Began in Autumn was a group exhibition of Kristi Kongi, Marit Mihklepp, Krista Mölder and Ann Mirjam Vaikla, and curated by Leslie Moody Castro. This is an exhibition by four female artists from Estonia, each of whom approaches cycles from a perspective and a lens that is unique and varied. Together we have talked about light, the sky, the aerodynamics of fluidity, the fluidity of being.Together in this space, Krista, Marit, Kristi, and Ann Mirjam bring the Estonian forest into the tropics of Mexico, the diffused light of winter together with the sharp contrasts of a tropical summer. Here the landscape bleeds both in and out of a space, setting the forest afire with light. www.ondamx.art/en/evento/The%20death%20began%20in%20Autumn-IGAEd4EpceduausTwQ4z Groep

2023Celestial Bodies Tartu Observatory Tõravere, Estland123 The residency ended with a public showing at the observatory wherein the artists presented their process and outcome. Eglė Šimėnaitė is a performance artist who worked with the notion of a blue hour. The work took the shape of a collective meditation / performative installation. Piibe Kolka, who is an experimental filmmaker, has originally grown up at the observatory’s grounds as a daughter of a star scientist. The showing took the shape of a performative lecture where she guided us through the grounds of the space centre combining it with her personal childhood memories. Marit Mihklepp is an artistic researcher who is interested in meteorites. She presented to the audience an experimental video clip transforming a nearby pond into a meteorite crater through speculative storytelling. Juss Heinsalu is a ceramist whose main material and interest lies in the material clay. He ended up introducing us to limestone plates from where he had engraved scientific drawings – therefore bringing together to the same image plain fossils of the earth and the cosmic structures. magiccarpets.eu/residencies/celestial-bodies-navigating-between-scientific-knowledge-and-indigenous-wisdom/ Groep

2023Radical Symbiosis: The Social Life of Microbes Radius CCA Delft, Nederland Participating artists: Elina Alekseeva, Johanna Bruckner, Penelope Cain, Wim van Egmond, Lizan Freijsen, Escuela de Garaje, Aslı Hatipoğlu, Marit Mihklepp, Natalia Sorzano Curators: Mateo Chacón Pino & Àngels Miralda This exhibition gathers a group of artists who engage with bacteria, yeasts and microbes. In the three chapters THE INVISIBLE WORLD AROUND AND WITHIN US, PETRI DISH CULTURES and AN INTIMATE RELATION this exhibition asks which lessons we may learn from microbial life for our human existence on earth. The microbes that live in the crevices of this space and within our bodies are given a voice in a new sound-piece by Marit Mihklepp. Her work departs from a selection of writings by Antoni van Leeuwenhoek that describe his early encounters with microbes in a series of letters to other scientists. These words were a first glimpse at the inhabitants of the microscopic world that have been human collaborators for millennia. Van Leeuwenhoek’s astonishment at the discovery that bodies are full of these pulsating creatures was only the beginning of an entire scientific field. Mihklepp presents a variety of writings to expand on van Leeuwenhoek’s declarations of love to this invisible world. The microbe is taken by Mihklepp as the intermediary between the inside and the outside of the body, from the intestine to the walls of the exhibition space and beyond. Mihklepp searches for poetic images of possible interrelations between humans and the microbial world through language. Through a series of instructions, commentaries, and poetic inflections, we find a contemporary bestiary of an invisible world that she projects on the same wall that provided van Egmond’s starter cultures. www.radius-cca.org/en/exhibitions/radical-symbiosis-social-life-with-microbes Groep

2022Polymorphic Futures Gessnerallee Zürich Zurich, Zwitserland In the face of the intertwined social and ecological crisis reductive doomsday scenarios have gained popularity. In an attempt to provide alternative, more hopeful narratives we set out to explore the potential of performative practices to imagine new forms of collectivity, of being attentive to environmental processes and aware of our own entanglements with them and with one another. Polymorphic Futures, curated by Michaela Büsse and Benjamin Burger, converges and materializes the collective process in the form of an interactive exhibition. The audience is invited to join as active agents by exploring different ecosystems of thought, attending to transformative micro-practices, or inhabiting proposals for multi-species collaboration. www.otherwise.network/ Groep

20228th Artishok Biennial: Botanical Witnesses Tallinn Botanical Garden Tallinn, Estland123 The title of the 8th Artishok Biennial – Botanical Witnesses – will shift the field of human perception while elevating botanical specimens from the passive into the active state, to the role of engaged witnesses. Under the aegis of the current biennial, plants have become companions on the artists' creative journey while challenging the general approach towards plants as a piece of decor or commodity. From September 29 to October 30 ten artists present their new artworks during a 10-day-long opening marathon and each work is paired with ten critical writings produced by ten writers. The Tallinn Botanic Garden, this year’s biennials’ location, has been the initial impulse for the almost a year-long creative process for the artists and writers – a joint space for learning and unlearning. Accepting the challenge to create an artwork based on what they experienced in the botanical garden, the participating artists relate to various aspects of the site – the ones going beyond the visible contours of conventional plant collecting and categorisation. artishokbiennale.com/ab2022/#kunstnikud_est Groep

Narrating Just Sustainability in the City Institute for Advanced Study Amsterdam, Nederland ias.uva.nl/content/events/2022/04/narrating-just-sustainability-in-the-city.html The research project “Narrating Just Sustainability in the City” - led by ArtScience curator Bergit Arends, literature historian Tom Idema and environmental scientist Paul Behrens -, asks what forms of narrative might be required to support ‘just sustainabilities’ in the context of the Anthropocene. As part of the research three artists were invited to be part in this project: Temitayo Ogunbiyi (Lagos); Marit Mihklepp & Edgars Rubenis (Den Haag); Esmee Geerken (Amsterdam). The artists were asked to design ‘Instructions for performative actions’; to engage with their immediate environment in a playful way and respond to just sustainability in the city, addressing circular economy, teleconnections, ecosystems and power. Their instructions have been distributed within different communities, and responses to the instructions were shared in a workshop held in IAS.

2023Tartu2024 Neeruti, Tõravere, Estland123 We spent three weeks together with three other artists Eglė Šimėnaitė, Juss Heinsalu and Piibe Kolka. Our residency was curated by Ann Mirjam Vaikla and focused on the dialogue between the artists and the space centre’s scientists - and how that dialogue influenced artists’ creative work. In parallel artists-in-residence were looking into folklore connected to astronomy that used to be an important part of the old Estonians way of living. Vaikla writes about the residency: “Witnessing a change of light and feeling a strange, satisfying kind of enchantment somewhat sums up the common ground and approach between the invited artists of the residency Celestial Bodies – Navigating Between Scientific Knowledge and Indigenous Wisdom. Initially thought of as a continuation of last year’s residency, Attending To Liminality – Smoke Sauna Tradition which focused on a regional phenomena offering an immersive bodily learning experience from the intangible of ritualistic cleansing and healing, I pictured how Celestial Bodies, aka heavenly bodies, invites the artists to direct their attention outwards – to the physical entities beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. In retrospect, I can admit the opposite – to comprehend Celestial Bodies that appear to be absurdly far from human perception, made the artists look inwards, resulting in artistic processes connected to geological formulations, childhood memories, one’s own body, or recurring movement of terrestrial light.” magiccarpets.eu/residencies/celestial-bodies-navigating-between-scientific-knowledge-and-indigenous-wisdom/

2022Creative Europe Roots & Seeds XXI project Paris, Frankrijk Two-week-long research residency with an ecologist Meredith Root-Bernstein. In the center of our collaboration was thinking and being with the mounds, heaps and holes of Paris. Piles are the most primordial form of technique or technology, accumulations that make possible new materialities, affordances, and interactions. All of ecology (and a lot of art) can be described as moving and reshuffling piles of things. The mound, heap, or pile, is also an archive. We approached ‘large piles of something’ with field work practices from both ecological and artistic perspectives. We started with finding and mapping specific mounds and writing field notes. In the process we asked the following questions from the mounds: what kind of knowledge are you an archive of? What kind of movements are you holding? How did you get here? How would you make me part of you? rootsandseedsxxi.eu/open-call/

2023Field Docket Boek Sonic Acts Press various Amsterdam, Nederland www.sonicacts.com/archive/field-docket In July 2022, as part of the first FieldARTS residency, two dozen artists and researchers conducted undisciplined and collaborative fieldwork across the logistical flows of the Amsterdam port, the brackish waters of the IJmuiden estuary, and the shifting dunes of Texel Island in dialogue with marine chemists, Marxist theorists, Black feminist thinkers, and benthic ecologists. This research was conducted with the conviction that fieldwork might name an intimacy with the field and those drawn to it, not the variously distilled outcomes that typically follow once the sand bank is translated as a bank of data. Alive to the plural currents, contours and conflicts of the terrains of study – sensitive, in other words, to its milieu-specificity – the FieldARTS Docket details some coordinates for thought and practice as they were encountered in the field. The pocket-sized book contains thirty entries that are provisional, excessive, dialogic, often brackish, only lightly edited and arranged. Consisting of critical orientations drawn into focus during the collaborative residency, these entries present a sustained engagement with a field languishing at the edge of cultural concern while remaining central to the shape of transitions already well underway.

2023If There Is Nowhere to Hold on to, Root into Yourself and Grow from There – Marit Mihklepp interviewed by Victoria Douka-Doukopoulou Magazine Victoria Douka-Doukopoulou Amsterdam, Nederland sonicacts.com/archive/marit-mihklepp-if-there-is-nowhere-to-hold-on-to In early July 2022, artist Marit Mihklepp – with the support of Sonic Acts – participated in Transitional Waters, the inaugural FieldARTS residency, initiated by professors and researchers Jeff Diamanti and Fred Carter. During the intense weeklong programme, emerging scholars and artists engaged with the shifting estuarine environments of the littoral dune ecologies of Texel Island, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), and the colonial infrastructures of the Port of Amsterdam at Ijmuiden, now site of the world’s largest sea lock and offshore wind farm development. During the residency, Mihklepp further developed a project provisionally titled mound network theory of life, which she originally initiated with ecologist Meredith Root-Bernstein. The project investigates the mound, heap or pile as a threefold manifestation: as an epistemological object, the most primordial form of technique or technology, and one of the few methodologies utilised by science, art and nature, alike. The intention is to create a playful multidisciplinary methodology, or ‘repeatable instructions’, to think and be with mounds, piles, and heaps around us. This project is also the latest instance in Mihklepp’s long-term engagement in exploring the possibilities of communication between humans, more-than-human entities, and all other kind of things.
