This art work was inspired by transcription of Buddist sutras. Transcription of sutras for praying for peace and security is widely practiced in Japan from ancient times. Nowadays meanwhile it is also popular to take a look yourself again through transcribing sutras irrespective of religious practice in these days. It is not necessary to understand all philosophical meanings of sutras. Instead, it seems to be more important to reduce stress and to enhance concentration by continuing writing characters with a brush and ink.

These works are collaboration with a master of coloring bronze and copper wares in Japan. A color of bronze is depending on type of metals and components of alloy, polishing levels and coloring techniques. Colors from Japan-specific techniques are totally unique. Unlikely paintings and frescos, metal objects were less paid attention regarding colors. However masters of coloring bronze and copper wares in Japan have a variety of coloring techniques and methods, which were inherited from ancient times and originally developed. In Europe, coloring bronze generally apply spraying or painting on surface of products. Colors from Japan-specific techniques are totally different. It is difficult to find such masters even in Japan though, they understand in a sensitive way how to adjust components of solution or timing of heating up on the basis of weather, humidity, components of alloy, polished levels. A point worthy of special mention is that Japanese masters often use local ingredients, which are closely related to Japanese lifestyle such as a green tea, grated radishes, sake, rice bran, soured plums and of course URUSHI - Japanese natural lacquer, for coloring.

Children used to play in a property of shrines surrounded by trees in Japan. They should feel sacred and solemn atmosphere after going through a shrine gate, however children enjoyed playing with wooden or stone made multilevel structures and objects. Even a sacred space without any ceremonies becomes a playground for children. I have made a sculpture called Kinoko. Kinoko is a creature with a mushroom head and it creates a new world after the Pink Tsunami disaster in my narrative story. I have represented the sculpture inside of an old western building. Structures and decorations of the building were considered as a part of art works. It was represented as a sacred and solemn existence. On the other hand an exhibition in The Hague last year, Kinoko was represented at a different circumstance. It was situated at the entrance hall of a big window at a gallery. There was a kinder garden next to the gallery. Small children, who are not visitors of the gallery in general, could see a part of the sculpture from outside. They were so excited and kept waving their hands to the sculpture. It should be as a sacred and solemn existence under my story. However Kinoko was just a comical mushroom man for them in the situation. I realized that the work can be represented in a different space and atmosphere. A sacred existence in a story can become an icon of a playground in another story. The new situation makes possible to move on the image and the narrative to the next stage.

I represent a new mythology called Pink Tsunami, which describes how the world came to total destruction. Typically, symbols have the form of words, sounds, and ideas. This story, shown only with visual images, represents a number of different meanings and ideas. In this way the story brings personal images and stories to the reader based on their experience and environment, giving them more room to read in a different way. Mythology was traditionally transferred by the oral tradition on a small scale. During this process, the story was modified, arranged, simplified and details were added. I have tried to reproduce the same process of mythology all on my own by drawing images in different styles and materials over and over again.

2023DNR Expo De Nieuwe regents Den Haag, Nederland Ai Hashimoto laat zich o.a. inspireren door de tsunamiramp in Japan. Ai is een Japanse kunstenares die woont en werkt in Den Haag. Ze heeft haar werk tentoongesteld in verschillende galerijen en musea. Vorig jaar was haar grafische werk te bewonderen bij Escher in Het Paleis en één van haar optredens werd getoond op nationale televisie. Het startpunt voor haar werk is altijd een verhaal. Een van haar grote inspiratiebronnen is de tsunamiramp in Japan. Ze ontwikkelde een verhaal over het personage ‘Kinoko’, de nieuwe soorten organismen ontwikkelt en een onbekend landschap uit de kale woestijn creëert. Kinoko daalt af uit de lucht met een tas vol “essentie van het leven.” Ai heeft een achtergrond als antropoloog en neemt haar antropologische kennis en interesse op in haar kunstwerken. 2023A rite - Underwater Theatre De Regents Den Haag, Nederland De Japanse kunstenares Ai Hashimoto liet zich inspireren door de tsunami bij Fukushima die diepe indruk op haar maakte. “Het vertelt dat er altijd – ook wanneer alles verloren lijkt – een mogelijkheid voor nieuw leven is.” Dat is een hoopvolle boodschap, die ver van de toeslagenaffaire lijkt te staan, maar misschien wel een vergelijkbaar ritueel nodig heeft om weer licht aan de horizon te zien. “Ik gebruik liever geen woorden om mijn verhaal te vertellen. Ik deel mijn verhaal via mijn kunstwerken. De beelden moeten spreken, en iedereen mag er zijn eigen ervaring in doorleven.” Ai creëert met een roze tsunami van zand een nieuw landschap. Het blijkt geen statisch kunstwerk. Er gebeurt iets. Er wordt een verhaal verteld. Kleine witte objecten staan voor nieuwe vormen van leven geordend op een spiraal. Ai: “In veel religies is de spiraal ook een symbool van nieuw leven. Ik loop van buiten naar binnen, langs de spiraal die mij de weg wijst naar het centrum. Daar zal ik mijn nieuwe leven vinden. 2022Koninklijke ontmoetingen Escher in het Paleis Den Haag, Nederland Escher in The Palace is set to host a royal encounter this autumn. The work of 10 artists based in The Hague will be on display as part of the Royal Encounters exhibition, a dialogue between tradition and experimentation, between past and present. Escher in The Palace invited the artists to produce new graphic work, drawing inspiration from Lange Voorhout Palace and its principal resident, Queen Mother Emma. The artists were challenged to step outside their comfort zone for this exhibition, as they are ordinarily engaged in a wide array of different disciplines, from major architectural installations to photography. Their innovative approach is yielding a colourful palette of artworks. A kaleidoscopic perspective on history which shows that graphic art is more than two-dimensional work on paper. From an imprinted robe to a silk screen window to a golden etching: the possibilities of the graphic medium are endless. Ai Hashimoto was invirted by Escher in het Paleis to produce new graphic work, drawing inspiration from Lange Voorhout Palace and its principal resident, Queen Mother Emma. In this series of etchings on gold paper, she has let her imagination run wild for the morning routine of Queen Mother Emma at Lange Voorhout Palace. In cartoon form, you follow Emma as she wakes up and gets out of bed peacefully, has meetings in the library, and enjoys a cup of tea in the baroque dining room. With lady-in-waiting Henriëtte van de Poll, she walks along the coast of Scheveningen, a favorite ritual of Emma's. 2022Nationale Nieuwjaarszegen De Kloosterkerk Den Haag, Nederland Dominee René de Reuver, scriba van de Protestantse Kerk in Nederland, spreekt de zegen uit voor het nieuwe jaar. 2023A rite - Underwater Theater De Regents Den Haag, Nederland This rite is related to death and rebirth. For the performance, she solemnly walks from the outside of the spiral into the center (the ceremony for death). She holds sacred pink sand in a container. When she is in the center, she gently pours pink sand and walks along the spiral (the ceremony for rebirth). In the end of the rite, there is a huge pink colored spiral. The concept of rituals is very important for her art practice because she would like to realize liminal status - ‘liminality’ for audience through her art works. In anthropology, liminality is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of rites, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the rite is complete.
