Intrigued by how corporations sell us products we have no need for, we wished to experiment and invent an unnecessary food. Chips are plain and simple, and still people all over the world consume them substantially. The product has been eaten for over 200 years, but we argue that in all this time, it has not been able to develop into the perfect snack. We found some fundamental issues with them, to which our product could offer solutions. Our video will address these issues, by applying our additive. We imagine people would voluntarily consume it. They would be influenced by the marketing of large corporations, pushing the consumption of an unnecessary good, like the cosmetics industry does today. (This work in cooperation with Ellen ven den Assem and Pim Kerssemakers)

When seeing a table that has been cut in half, people automatically associate it with what the original table might have looked like, instead of directly trying to understand the oblique half of the table itself. So, what is the gap between these two actions? Similarly, people easily ignore the fact that they can speak more than the language itself. So, when people attempt to read the paper that lay in the open drawer, they feel that it is readable and unreadable simultaneously. Is the problem here the uncomfortable angle or the wrong method of attempting to read it? Also, does it make sense if they consider the diagram as the text itself? Furthermore, a piece of questionnaire standing in the two walls is a two-dimensional word converted to a three-dimensional space. The audience needs to move their bodies and to read the questionnaire at the same time. During the process of walking across two walls, it feels as though the body movement is already starting to answer the questionnaire. In here, questions arise concerning whether the mind is reading the question first or the body.

In this project, I shall focus on using an objective way, to represent the predecessor of the gallery space – a sugar and alcohol grocery factory manager office. I collected detailed information about how the furniture has been placed, through an interview with an ex-worker Mr. Tan. Then, I used tap measurements as the media to represent the specific position and altitude of the furniture. The tape measurements in this space, not only is a concrete item, but also an abstract pattern. Furthermore, in this rectangular room, the tiles are equally and neatly arranged on the floor, it turns the space by 45 degrees, and then creates a new space. The method of display the tiles turns the space into an invisible labyrinth, with the audience being free to choose their walking route. However, the freeness limits the way of how people walk in the space as well. The tape measurements and tiles were created by two independent spaces, but influence each other. For every step the audiences take, they appear to be making a judgment and a conclusion of where one was. I pondered on the activity between the space and the audiences’ bodies, before giving any assumptions. In addition, the tile 25863 is the manager office phone number.

Is the objective fidelity criteria itself is a subjective judgment? It seems that an essential part of understanding is not having to explain, making the understanding itself is a misunderstanding. As Wittgenstein mentioned, “Everything that looks like an explanation is actually already falsified and ought not to satisfy us completely.” In this project, I shall focus on visualising what is going on during the process of people turning illogical things into that which is commonly accepted. I am trying to assembles the space into a multi-dimensional feedback system. When the audience enters the “empty” space, they feel the contradiction between the abstract distance and concrete visual experience. So the question here, is ‘ what is far?’ and ‘what is close?’ Or what is the standard definition of ‘far’ and ‘near’? And during the whole process, ‘what is happening?’
